A Letter from our CEO: Astadia Aquires Anubex

I have some very exciting news: Astadia has just completed the acquisition of Anubex, a leader in mainframe migrations to the Cloud. The addition of the Anubex team, and product technology in Refactoring, is a perfect complement to the Astadia Lift & Shift Replatforming capabilities and experience.

In today’s environment, many organizations have a “Cloud First” strategy for deploying business applications. Since most of the important business applications reside on mainframes, moving these applications and databases to any Cloud platform requires expert skills and technology.

The combination of Astadia’s Replatforming solutions, plus the Anubex Refactoring capabilities, offers a complete mainframe migration RoadMap. Astadia now offers all solution sets required to migrate from any IBM Z Series, or Unisys ClearPath platform, to the Cloud platform of their choosing.

This is an exciting time to be in the Mainframe Migration business. The rapidly shrinking pool of people with mainframe software and hardware skills has given a new sense of urgency to IT buyers. The shortage of these critical skills is exacerbated by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Astadia has been at the forefront of the “Mainframe-to-Cloud” migration market for many years. Throughout this timeframe, the “Lift & Shift” computing model has dominated market demand. These applications are primarily COBOL-to-COBOL.

As the Mainframe-to-Cloud market demand accelerates, the automatic Refactoring from these traditional programming languages like COBOL, to newer programming languages such as Java and C#, has emerged as a popular and rapidly growing migration option, in addition to Lift & Shift.

The migration marketplace, and our clients, have diverse requirements when moving off their mainframe, to any one of the popular Cloud platforms. In some cases, the Lift & Shift option is appropriate, and may be combined with Refactoring as a Phase 2 project. Or, a client may Refactor as a starting point, and move directly from the multiple mainframe programming languages to Java or C#, with an SQL-based database. Replatforming and Refactoring are complimentary, and essential options in any consideration to move mainframe applications and databases to the popular Cloud platforms.

The acquisition of Anubex by Astadia allows the Anubex R&D team to continue to focus on extending their portfolio of products (CodeTurn, DataTurn, TestMatch and DataMatch) to automate refactoring and testing of legacy systems. The development of these products started well over 20 years ago, and today includes legacy technologies such as Assembler, COBOL, IDMS and Natural ADABAS that can be migrated to, among others, Java or C# in combination with all the leading SQL-databases – with the resulting applications ready for deployment in the (public) Cloud. The possibility to offer these solutions in a Factory model to partners and customers guarantees scalability.
